1. Introduction

Welcome to this electronics how-to guide. In this document, we will cover how to assemble and calibrate your PolyDye unit for full color printing.

2. Hardware and Tools Needed

Before we start, make sure you have the following hardware and tools...

Once you have everything ready, we can begin by...

3. Assembling PolyDye

Fitting to Printhead

Ensure no electronics have been fitted to the cartrdige holder yet.

Turn on your printer and home it.

Lower the nozzle until it is touching/almost touching the bed.

Shroud

Attach the cartridge holder to the hotend mount by putting a 3mm nut into each groove on the inside of

the shroud and pushing the screws through the holes on the inside of the cartridge holder.

Do Not Tighten the screws fully as we will position the cartridge holder next. Make sure you have not fitted the electronics before tightening the screws.

Attach the shroud with holder to the hotend.

Slide holder up and down until there is 1.0-1.5 mm clearence off the bed. Do this properly to avoid collisions.

Use a screwdriver that fits through the holes in the side of the cartridge and tigthen the screws fully.

While keeping the holder and shroud attached, remove the shroud from the printer for the next steps

Fitting Electronics to cartridge holder

Take the interface board and place it bottom first into the slot on the inside of the holder while being careful not to damage the pins.

Shroud

Firmly press down on the neck of the interface board until it clicks into position

Shroud

Take the daughter board and place it top first into the cutout in front of the holder making sure the key is aligned before firmly pressing down on the board to click it into place

ShroudShroud

Connect the two boards at the top with the FPC cable. Be sure to slide out the retainer clip before inserting the FPC cable.

Shroud

Assembling the main board

Place main board into the bottom of the enclosure and align the 3 mounting holes

Place the nuts into the recesses and fasten with screws

Snap lid onto bottom of enclosure and press around egdes until fully snapped closed

5. Cables and Final Fitting

Make sure the cables are connected as shown, failure to do so might result in damaging you, your printer and the PolyDye unit

Take inverted 3 pin JST cable and connect it from the main board to the daugther board as shown in the image while ensuring the colors match on each pin

Take ribbon cable and connect the mainboard with daughter board while ensuring that pin 1 matches on both sides

Connect USB C cable to unit and connect the micro usb end to the printer

Take USB PSU and connect it to side of unit via USB C connector while keeping the unit powered off

4. Flashing firmware - First Flash(DIY Only, Beta Units come preflashed)

After assembly, we need to flash the unit with the latest firmware. Follow this process if it is the first time flashing the unit.

Connect a USB C data cable to the top of the unit and the other end into your PC

Connect the USB C Power cable to the side of the unit but do not power up the unit yet

Navigate to ESP Tool and click on the Connect Button

Connect

Power on the device and click on the COM port that appears and then ok. This needs to be done fairly quickly

COM Select

In the flash address box enter 0x10000, if there is 0x1000 just add a zero at the end.

After entering the flash address click on "Choose File" and select "ESP32_Phantom.bin from where you downloaded it

Click on Program and wait for the flash process to complete.

Flashing

Future firmware updates will now be performed from the SD Card

Next we need to flash the web interface to the unit, copy the "www.bin" file you downloaded to the root folder of the SD Card

Disconnect USB C data cable from unit

Power cycle unit

Insert the SD card into the unit, you should see a blue light come on on the unit. It will turn off again if flashing was successful.

Next edit the "wifi.txt" file you downloaded and complete your WIFI network SSID and password in the provided fields

Copy the edited "wifi.txt" file to the SD Card

Insert the sd card into the unit again, wait 5 seconds and then power cycle the unit.

If all went well you can now connect to the unit by opening your browser and navigating to "http://phantom.local"

Connecting to the unit through Wifi

Next edit the "wifi.txt" file you downloaded and complete your WIFI network SSID and password in the provided fields

Copy the edited "wifi.txt" file to the SD Card

Insert the sd card into the unit again, wait 5 seconds and then power cycle the unit.

If all went well you can now connect to the unit by opening your browser and navigating to "http://phantom.local"

If you have more than one PolyDye unit on the same wifi you need to use the IP address(obtained from your router) in the browser
